British heavyweight singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Edward Christopher Sheeran popularly known as Ed Sheeranwas found not guilty of plagiarism Marvin Gay“Let’s Get It On” before a US court.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter has been sued by the estate of Marvin Gaye after Gaye’s co-writer Ed Townsend’s daughter, Katherine Townsend-Griffin, argued that Sheeran, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Publishing owed them money for copyright infringement.
Ed, who has stated he would give up his music career if found guilty, denied having stolen elements from Marvin Gaye’s 1973 smash to create his own 2014 world hit.
According to several reports, a musicologist in Sheeran’s defense explained to the court that the four-chord sequence had been used in several songs prior to the release of Gaye’s single “Let’s Get It On”.

On May 4, 2023, a jury in a New York court found Ed Sheeran not guilty of the charges against him, and subsequently announced his release.
