Rima’s growth continued to develop rapidly as the singer is now tied with Wizkid as the only Nigerian artists to do so in the US chart.
Aside from breaking the record for the highest peaking position by a Nigerian song, Rima is now tied with Grammy award-winning singer and artist Wizkid as the only Nigerian artists to hit number one on the US chart.
Rima Calm down A remix featuring international singer Selena Joyce set a new record as it now ties with Big Wiz as the only Nigerian artists in history to unlock the number one spot on the US Radio Songs chart. It peaked at number on the chart with its record-breaking single essence Featuring Tems.
This achievement comes weeks after the singer’s song also became the first Nigerian song to top the US Pop Airplay chart in May 2023. The achievement was also confirmed by Billboard in an official release confirming that,
“Calm Down” by Rima and Selena Gomez climbed to #1 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart (dated May 13). The song, released on Jonzing World/Mavin/SMG Music/Virgin/Interscope Records, marks Rima’s first lead on the list. Gomez added her second #1 Pop AirPlay song, after three consecutive hits, in 2015-16: “Hands to Myself” (for one week in April 2016), “Same Old Love” (two weeks, January 2016) and “Goodbye”. For You,” featuring A$AP Rocky (Mon, September-October 2015).
Calm down It also peaked at No. 3 on the charts, and Billboard, in discussion with its staff, determined what would have led to the song’s ascent on the chart. revealed some, I think what really works with “Calm Down” is that the song isn’t tied to a specific cultural moment. Burna Boy’s Last Last is tied to summer 2021, and Wizkid & Tems’ “Essence” to the summer before that. While having a huge cultural moment can absolutely boost a song’s commercial success, you also run the risk of people moving on once the moment has passed. With “Calm Down”, attention wasn’t focused on the song for two or three months. Instead, the song grew along with Rima’s rise in global status, and Selena Gomez’s remix arrived just in time to keep some wind in the song’s sails. On top of that, “Calm Down” has been rocking for a minute now, so it was also able to capitalize on the groundwork Rema had put in with Soundgasm.
